….and so it begins

Posted by willkay on August 17, 2014

Hello, and welcome to the new readers!

This is where I write my blog about school…however, this year I am not promising to write every day. This year, Mrs. Kay and I intend to keep a photographic record of the school year. Basically, we are intending to take as many pictures as possible. Plus we will also be taking video. WordPress, where this blog is based, is not the ideal website for hosting photos and videos. So, although we will be posting some stuff on here, most of the pictures will be found on Flickr.

Videos will be published on YouTube.

In the left-hand column you will find clicky links that you can click on! These will take you to our pages.

Any questions? Please ask. Use the comments or send a note into school.

Thank you.

Merry Christmas, One And All!

Posted by willkay on December 21, 2013

Every year, my elder brother (seven years, if you are asking) would play the same trick on my younger brother (two years, if you were asking) and me. As we arrived home, after attending Midnight Mass, he would wake us up by shouting:

“I don’t care what your name is Fatso! Get those reindeer off the roof!”

Because we were nine and seven, we were normally asleep in the car, after the short journey back from church. His shouting would wake us – and scare us! Had my brother really seen Father Christmas on the roof with his reindeer? Did he not know who he was? Did he just call Father Christmas, “Fatso”? DID HE TELL HIM TO GO?!?!?!????

Every year! Every year until I was 12, and then he left home. Good times!

Anyhoo, here’s the sixth grade singing a song:

Reading Helps Children’s Maths

Reading ‘helps children’s maths’

11 September 2013 Last updated at 09:33 BST

A new study by the Institute of Education shows that children who read for pleasure are not only better at English but are also better at maths.

The study’s co-author Dr Alice Sullivan explained to the Today programme’s Sarah Montague the possible reasons for the results.

“It absolutely makes sense that you would expect reading for pleasure to improve children’s vocabularies,” she said.

“But I think that that also does improve children’s ability to take on new information and new concepts across the curriculum.”

She added: “A child who has a narrow vocabulary may constantly be coming across things they don’t understand.”

First broadcast on the Today programme on Wednesday 11 September.

If you want me, I’ll be sat in the corner, holding a big sign, that says:

                                   TOLD YOU SO!

Hello. It’s been a long time hasn’t it? For those of you who don’t know, my job has changed. Calm down, calm down. I’m still a sixth grade teacher, but I am the ONLY sixth grade teacher. The school decided that it would be a good idea to put the two fifth grades together, and make one sixth grade. There were several reasons for this, one of the reasons was that this would release Mrs. Kay to teach maths to the fifth and fourth grades. This she agreed to do. However, as brilliant as Mrs. Kay is, taking on both fifth grades and both fourth grades would mean that she would never see the light of day. Therefore, I was asked to take a fourth grade for maths. How does this change my life? Well, as regular readers will know, I struggle for time to write this blog on a regular basis. Now, with my usual job (the sixth grade) plus the fourth grade, I am really struggling for time. This means that the blog will suffer. I just don’t have enough time to keep this as up to date as I would like.

BUT I will still be writing a blog!

The posts will be few and far between, but there will be posts. Hopefully there will be more photos and videos though. These I will try to post on here as regularly as possible.

Are you ready for 2013-2014? Because here we go….

Book Month – Day Two: Part Two

Posted by willkay on March 5, 2013

And I’ve just been told that Carlos also did a Book Report today. He recommended Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto and (yes, AND) Warriors by Erin Hunter. Oo, oo, oo I know something about this series. Actually, I know something about the author…do you? Anyhoo, here’s the video…

As an added extra, nothing to do with Book Month, but the sixth grade sent two students to compete in the zone-wide SEP competition, Roberto and Juan Fernando. Juan Fer managed to get into the top 30! Well done! Here he recounts how his day went…

I read an interview with Ian Chappell yesterday, and he was asked what one thing annoys him the most. He replied that it was the misuse of the word “awesome“. His complaint was that too often people use the word for something mundane, for example: That was an awesome sandwich!  His feelings on the matter was that “awesome” should only be used when referring to something that actually causes AWE.

With that in mind, can I offer you the chance to view this video. It was discovered by Pablo (one of my students), and he sent the link to Mrs. Kay. She immediately showed me the video. I was in awe. This is AWESOME!

The Scale of The Universe

As promised, here is a link to the website we were looking at in class today. Click here and it will take you to the page. Or, if you like typing in links (why?), here’s the address:

Please note: you need Adobe Flash installed to play it…which means that you need a desktop or laptop computer. It probably won’t work on a mobile device.
